Carrier Phrases

Around the age of 2, children will start to learn a lot more words very rapidly and a way that you as a carer can help with this is by using something called Carrier Phrases. These are small 3-4-word sentences that help the child expand from using single word speech into using small sentence speech. An example of this would “You pour juice” or “Put coat on”. This will allow the child to identify each word instead of saying something like “Go and put your coat on” where there is too many words to identify. From this, children can expand their vocabulary and start really speaking for themselves!

You can use the resources provided below so you can use these words at home but in picture form as well. Encourage your child to say what is on the picture when they are asking for something.
