Job Purpose:

This role will lead the outdoor activities department to effectively deliver all programmes and outdoor activities across the YMCA Fairthorne Manor site.  These activities form the programmes that meet the needs of the local and wider communities that we serve delivering our purpose that everybody should have the opportunity to lead healthy, happy lives.

Main Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Deliver high quality training programmes for volunteers, seasonal and weekend staff.
  • Ensure that the centre provides a high standard of instruction across a range of outdoor activities for customers of all ages and abilities.
  • Continual review and monitoring of the quality and effectiveness of our programmes to meet customer needs.
  • Work with the Centre Manager to ensure all site wide compliance for outdoor activities and liaising with external technical advisors.
  • Work with the Centre Manager to maintain risk assessments and operating systems to ensure the safety of all activities.
  • Contribute and commit to Fairthorne Manor’s drive to deliver excellent customer care.
  • Act as part of the Duty Manager system and provide cover on an ad-hoc basis.
  • Provide leadership and effective management of planning, delivery and monitoring of exciting programmes to include, but not limited to, Daycamps, schools, groups, events and community programmes.
  • Deputise for the Centre Manager as necessary.
  • Responsibility for the induction, training and welfare of volunteers at Fairthorne Manor and ensure they have a point of call throughout their stay with the support of the Volunteer Manager.

Person Specification & Key Competencies

Personal attributes

  • Genuine enthusiasm for the work and values of the organisation and a desire to contribute towards the delivery of the YMCA Way.
  • Ability to plan and implement activities, using good organisation skills
  • Ability to communicate well and engage with a wide range of people, including children staff and group leaders.
  • Ability and willingness to relate positively to customers and staff
  • A sound understanding of effective customer service.
  • Aptitude for supervising a team of staff.

Qualifications/Experience

Essential:

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in a senior role in an adventurous outdoor setting.
  • Proven track record of people management, communication skills and motivation of teams.
  • NGB qualifications to a high level in a range of activities; Core Coach, ERCA High Ropes Instructor & Rescuer, Climbing Wall Instructor, PPE Inspector & Operational Inspection & Maintenance Course.
  • Good understanding of, and qualification in, health & safety and safeguarding to protect children and vulnerable adults as well as self
  • First aid qualification (minimum of 16 hours qualification)
  • IOSH qualification
