Job Purpose: 

The Cook will work as part of a team undertaking all aspects of catering for children and adults, including preparing batch homemade lunches for 100 nursery children, and breakfast, lunch and evening meals for residential groups of children and adults.

Main Duties & Responsibilities:

  • At all times work within the YMCA Way.
  • Support in the cooking and presentation of high quality, tasty and nutritious meals for babies, children and adults, following existing systems and recipes and utilising fresh ingredients wherever possible.
  • Support the set-up and clear-down of the kitchen.
  • Ensure YMCA policies and procedures are followed at all times including, but not limited to, Safer Food Better Business (HACCP), COSHH, health & safety, and safeguarding.
  • Place food orders where necessary, following systems and budget.
  • Ensure all allergens are identified and managed, enabling YMCA to meet all dietary needs safely.
  • Communicate between shifts to ensure customers receive the best possible service.
  • Ensure you act in the interests of your own safety & the safety of others at all times.
  • Maintain a high standard of personal hygiene, timekeeping, cleanliness and neatness.
  • Undertake training and professional development.
  • Anything else reasonably requested by the management of the charity.

Person Specification & Key Competencies

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Hospitality or relevant experience and willingness to train.
  • A passion for producing high quality food.
  • Basic knowledge of health and safety.
  • Knowledge of children and babies’ nutritional needs.
  • Food hygiene qualification or willingness to train.

Personal Attributes:

  • Able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to communicate effectively as part of a team.
  • Remains focused in a busy environment.
  • A genuine enthusiasm for the work of YMCA, including willingness to step in and help others in the team.
  • Friendly and approachable manner.
