National Apprenticeship Week provides an opportunity to shine a light on the positive impact apprenticeships have on individuals and businesses. At YMCA Fairthorne Group, we offer a number of different apprenticeships.

Why do an apprenticeship with the YMCA?

Many people opt to do an apprenticeship because it is a great way to gain hands-on experience, earn while you learn, and develop valuable skills in a specific trade or profession, leading to better job opportunities and career growth.

YMCA Fairthorne Group covers many locations across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, offering many different opportunities from early years apprenticeships to office-based apprenticeships.

Considering the area we cover, apprenticeships in trades are invaluable to keep us operating smoothly.

George’s Apprenticeship

George, our carpentry apprentice, expressed that he had been 100% supported since starting his 2-year apprenticeship back in September 2024. Day-to-day, his main task includes assisting with maintenance jobs, which has given him the chance to learn a number of techniques which will be extremely beneficial for his future career. Constantly learning and being motivated to do so is what he said he enjoyed most about his apprenticeship with YMCA. When we asked George to share the most rewarding part, he shared that seeing how happy his work had made people. An example he gave was building new equipment for our Fairthorne Manor Nursery, and seeing the joy it gave others.

Aaron’s Apprenticeship

Aaron is currently undertaking his painting and decorating apprenticeship with the team at YMCA. This offers him the chance to develop skills on site, whilst learning in the classroom at college. A decorating apprenticeship provides hands-on experience, and the opportunity to learn valuable skills in painting, wallpapering, and surface preparation. Thanks to our brilliant team, Aaron has found the level of mentorship he’s received to be invaluable. Speaking further about his time at the YMCA, he shared that he believes that his apprenticeship is helping him prepare for his next steps and future responsibilities.

Their Advice

When we asked George what advice he would give to people considering an apprenticeship, he said to think about the future, opposed to the money! Hard work and dedication in an apprenticeship will hopefully result in positive financial and career growth. Aaron even said he would consider doing another one, as he finds it a fun way to develop his profession. Both George and Aarons glowing feedback on how they’ve found their YMCA apprenticeship really highlights to us the positive impact we can have on young people, by providing them with an opportunity.
