What the Spring Statement Revealed

Today’s Spring Statement by the chancellor acknowledges the urgent need for action, outlining plans to invest in more social and affordable housing in the upcoming years. Given the ongoing housing crisis that continues to put young people at a disadvantage, this support is crucial.

Moreover, it revealed the government’s intention to support young people into employment. This is a positive move, especially as so many have been held back in securing stable work. However, there is growing concern about the decision to remove the health element of Universal Credit for individuals under the age of 22. This policy decision isolates young people living with long-term illness or disability.  This decision will see them without the vital financial support they need.

YMCA’s Statement

CEO of YMCA England and Wales, Denise Hatton, has shared this statement:

“Today’s statement rightly acknowledges the urgent need to tackle the housing crisis, and we welcome ambitions to boost housebuilding to a forty-year high. However, it is vital that these plans prioritise truly affordable homes to ensure that young people – many of whom already face significant barriers to independence – are not left behind once again.

We welcome the Chancellor’s focus on supporting young people into employment. Too many have faced persistent barriers to securing decent jobs and accessing local opportunities. However, we are deeply concerned by the decision to remove the health element of Universal Credit for those under 22. Young people living with long-term illness or disability should not be penalised because of their age. Tackling youth unemployment requires a targeted approach – removing barriers, providing meaningful support, and creating quality job opportunities within the communities young people call home.”

As we look forward to the promised housing and employment support, it’s essential that these policies are built on a foundation of inclusivity. Affordable housing and meaningful job opportunities must go hand-in-hand. This ensures that young people are not left behind in the pursuit of a more equitable future.

YMCA Fairthorne Group would like to thank our local Members of Parliament for continuing to be champions for the charity sector, with their support, we can make a difference for young people.
