ymca, fairthorne manor volunteer, marketing volunteer, volunteer opportunities

Over the summer, YMCA Fairthorne Group welcomed a marketing volunteer who has been capturing photos of all that Fairthorne has to offer. From outdoor adventures to community events, her photographs showcase the vibrant activities that bring Fairthorne to life. We asked her to share her volunteering journey – what inspired her to get involved and what she learned.

Hi, my name’s Megan and I am currently studying my A-levels at Barton Peveril College. This summer, I have been part of the amazing YMCA marketing team where I have learnt skills, and had valuable experiences.

I wanted to do this work experience in order to see what it is like to work in a marketing environment and to see if I will pursue this as a further career. Furthermore, YMCA is such a vital part of the community and has changed many lives across the years, so I wanted to be apart of this, and volunteering seemed like the best route for me. Volunteering is key to charities such as the YMCA, so I was eager to support them. The friendliness and caring nature of all staff at YMCA made me feel welcome and not wanting to leave!

What has my time involved?

Before starting my volunteering, I was in communication with the marketing and volunteering teams, which helped me prepare for what was in store and what my responsibilities would be on site. I shared that I was interested in marketing and photography and they found the perfect role for me.

During YMCA’s Daycamps and Holiday Clubs, I took photos of the activities such as abseiling, fire lighting and stand up paddleboarding. This was exciting as I got to do what I was passionate about and also be involved in the action! After the activities were done the team guided me through the editing process for the photos I had taken. They also taught me how to upload my photographs to the website which was definitely out of my comfort zone, but with their support, I felt comfortable taking on this challenge.

What are my key takeaways?

Volunteering at YMCA Fairthorne Group has been a blast and I would happily come back. Everyone has been so patient and encouraging. I can’t thank the marketing team enough, they went above and beyond to support me, exceeding my expectations. I think my biggest takeaway is that teamwork is everything, at YMCA everyone looks out for each other and this is what makes the organisation so special.

Thank you!
