Volunteering: The Heartbeat of Our Communities This Easter and Beyond

“Across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, volunteering continues to play a vital role in strengthening communities and supporting those who need it most. At YMCA Fairthorne Group, this contribution is not simply an addition to our work – it is fundamental to how we deliver meaningful, lasting impact.

Each year, we welcome individuals from across our local communities, as well as international volunteers, into our Early Years, Youth and Community services. While their backgrounds may differ, their motivations are often the same: a desire to contribute, to feel connected, and to make a positive difference.

Over the past 12 months, 140 volunteers have contributed more than 23,000 hours of their time. This represents a significant and tangible contribution to the delivery of our services, enabling us to extend both the reach and quality of support we provide.

Volunteering supports our organisation in practical ways – enhancing capacity, strengthening delivery, and enabling new opportunities – but its value extends far beyond this. It plays a key role in creating inclusive, connected communities.

Within our Youth Services, volunteers help shape programmes that respond to the lived experiences of young people, supporting them to move forward with confidence and independence. Across our community spaces, they help to create welcoming environments where individuals feel able to engage, build relationships, and access support. At Fairthorne Manor, volunteers contribute to the safe delivery of outdoor and activity-based experiences, helping children and young people to build confidence, resilience, and a sense of achievement.

These contributions are not isolated moments – they are part of a wider ecosystem of support that enables individuals and communities to thrive.

However, the nature of volunteering is evolving. We are seeing a growing demand for more flexible and accessible opportunities, reflecting the realities of modern life. People want to contribute, but they need options that fit around work, family, and other commitments.

As an organisation, we are adapting to meet this need.

This includes creating opportunities that range from regular, ongoing roles through to shorter-term and event-based volunteering. One example of this is the Young Carers Festival, which takes place annually at Fairthorne Manor. This large-scale event requires significant volunteer support across a wide range of roles, providing an opportunity for individuals to contribute in a meaningful way, even over a short period of time.

Volunteering also delivers clear benefits for those who take part. Many of our volunteers tell us that their experience provides a sense of purpose, connection, and personal development. Whether applying existing skills in a new context or gaining confidence through new experiences, volunteering is a mutually beneficial relationship.

As we look ahead, our ambition is to continue growing and diversifying our volunteering offer, ensuring it remains accessible, inclusive, and impactful. Because volunteering is not simply about giving time – it is about strengthening communities, building connections, and creating opportunities for people to belong, contribute, and thrive.

For anyone who wants to know more, we would be delighted to welcome you to our team. Contact us on at Volunteering@ymca-fg.org
