Come Dine With Us

Many of the young adults who live with YMCA Fairthorne Group have had traumatic childhoods and have not had a safe and secure environment or life skills that we may teach our children as they grow up. Thanks to funding from UK Government, we have been able to run a series of cooking demonstrations and provide ingredients to teach these young adults how to cook healthy, balanced meals on a budget.

For many this has made a change from eating pot noodles and pizzas as they learn to prepare nutritious meals, such as chicken and leek pie, cottage pie and many more, plus treats including scones, apple pie and brownies, giving them life skills including how to read a recipe and how to budget for meal ingredients.

The young adults at our Basingstoke housing took this one step further with ‘Come Dine with Me’ events that brought them together to cook meals for each other, sit round a table and socialize, developing peer support and creating friendships. On the IOW the young mums we support there with their babies also got the dad’s and babies involved making it a family event.

What else is Happening

Further funding has also provided food parcels for residents in financial hardships local to our Andover Community Centre plus linen packs for Basingstoke Housing consisting of duvets, pillows, towels and duvet sets, the essentials for a good night’s sleep.
