Mental Health Awareness Week
This week (May 12 – 18) is Mental Health Awareness Week, and this year’s theme is Community. Being part of a safe, positive community is vital for our mental health and wellbeing.
At YMCA Fairthorne Group, we are committed to creating a community for our members, staff, and families to feel they belong. Community is at the heart of what we do, through our outdoor activities, nurseries, housing, and community centres.
Small Talks
Across the YMCA, we believe small talks, make a big difference. As a society, awareness about mental wellbeing is increasing, however, people still find it hard to open up. Through Small Talks, YMCA is encouraging you to TALK:
- Take the time
Check in with those around you, without the distractions of everyday life.
- Ask twice
Opening up can be scary, so patience is vital. “I’m Fine” is often a natural response, but this may not be the case.
- Learn to listen
Give people the time they need to talk about their feelings, and share what they need.
- Keep it up
Starting Small Talks during Mental Health Awareness Week is a good place to start. However, remember to continue checking in. Mental health can change – so continuing the conversation is so important.
