Job Purpose:

YMCA-FG provides supportive homes to almost 200 young people and families in Southampton, Basingstoke and Isle of Wight. The Supported Housing Area Manager will take the lead in ensuring our young people experience:

  • A therapeutic approach to personal support that leads to independence
  • Access to emotional wellbeing and mental health support
  • Opportunities for employment, training and education and the skills to sustain them
  • Daily opportunities for meaningful use of leisure time that meets their interests and needs

Our approach is to support young people in a trauma-informed way that contributes to their wellbeing and enables them to move to independent living. We have committed at YMCA to using evidence-based approaches including Advantaged Thinking and Psychologically Informed Environments and the role holder will support all staff, volunteers and external agencies to develop the skills, knowledge and confidence to apply these approaches every day. The role holder will also work closely with the housing management and estates team to ensure the quality and sustainability of supportive housing at YMCA.

Key responsibilities:

Housing Management

  • Design strategies to manage occupancy, taking a deep dive into occupancy gaps and deploying local housing resources to ensure full utilisation of our housing stock
  • Lead the Debt Management process in collaboration with the finance team, ensuring that strategies are put in place to reduce debt, allowing young people to secure their tenancy and increase move on opportunities.
  • Act as the point of escalation for serious anti-social behaviour or welfare concerns that require intervention.
  • Develop, in partnership with the Head of Facilities, strategies to ensure the proper maintenance and upkeep of buildings, to include regular spot checks of properties and communal spaces to ensure they meet the YMCA Fairthorne Group Standards.
  • Deploy strategies to ensure the welfare, safety and security of all residents living in supported YMCA Fairthorne Group Supported Accommodation.
  • Assist the Director of Youth Services in providing information, data and insights for regulatory reporting.

Supported Housing Leadership

  • Deploy Operations Managers, across Southampton and Basingstoke, and others to ensure on-site duty management and out of hours escalation systems operate 24/7 and ensure the leadership of a high functioning team.
  • Lead the strategic design and ensure operational delivery of evidence-based high-quality personal support and group activities for young people to enable them to achieve positive outcomes such as good physical and mental health, employability, healthy relationships and personal independence, in accordance with the quality standards framework set, enabling young people to access support and reduce inappropriate coping mechanisms and risk-taking behaviours.
  • Be responsible for the strategic development of one of the core quality areas outlined and ensure consistency of support & programme delivery across all Youth Services settings, including ensuring the right engagement and relationships with external organisations, agencies and local authorities to support delivery.
  • Lead the development and implementation of evidence-based working including trauma-informed approaches, application of Advantaged Thinking and Psychologically Informed Environments across YMCA supportive housing environments.
  • Develop strategies, with embedded processes for ongoing improvement, to ensure most young people living at YMCA are positively engaged, including education, employment, volunteering, training and exploration of their interests and hobbies.
