This week brought some of the hottest temperatures recorded across the UK, but at YMCA Basingstoke, the heat did little to slow the incredible work of the team or the sense of community shared by residents.

With the mercury climbing well into the 30s, activities were thoughtfully adapted to help everyone stay safe, hydrated and engaged, proving that even during a heatwave, there are plenty of opportunities to come together, have fun and make lasting memories.

Throughout the week, residents enjoyed an exciting programme of activities, each carefully planned with wellbeing at its heart.

One of the standout moments was a fantastic community BBQ, organised by our brilliant Young Engagement Coordinators (YECs). The smell of freshly cooked food, plenty of conversation and the chance to relax outdoors created the perfect setting for residents and staff to spend quality time together, strengthening the sense of community that sits at the heart of YMCA Basingstoke.

The fun continued with the Ultimate Water Quiz, which quickly became one of the week’s biggest highlights. Packed with laughter, friendly rivalry and plenty of opportunities to cool off, the quiz brought residents and staff together for an afternoon that perfectly captured the spirit of summer.

Behind every activity, however, was an incredible team working hard to ensure everyone remained comfortable, safe and supported throughout the exceptionally warm weather.

A huge thank you goes to Ben, Toni, Charlotte, Becca, Vic and Jemma, whose energy, creativity and unwavering commitment ensured that the week’s programme could continue without compromising on resident wellbeing. Whether it was making sure everyone stayed hydrated, adapting activities to suit the conditions, or simply taking the time to check in on residents throughout the day, their care was evident in everything they did.

Their efforts are a wonderful example of what makes YMCA Fairthorne Group so special. Creating positive experiences isn’t just about organising activities; it’s about building relationships, responding to people’s needs and creating environments where everyone feels welcome, valued and connected.

As summer continues, the Basingstoke team has shown that with a little creativity, flexibility and teamwork, even record-breaking temperatures can’t stop people from coming together.

Thank you to everyone involved for making the week such a fantastic success and for demonstrating, once again, the power of community in action.
