YMCA Fairthorne Group is thrilled to announce that we have been awarded £43,000 in funding through the Adventures Away from Home (AAfH) programme. This funding will enable us to provide fully funded outdoor learning experiences – including one-day visits and residential stays – for young people aged 11–18 who may not otherwise have the opportunity to experience the outdoors.

Who will this support

Through this support, we will be able to reach young people from underrepresented and disadvantaged backgrounds, including those experiencing financial hardship, living in care, young carers, refugees, or children with SEND.

One Hampshire School who supported our application said “Opportunities like this have a lasting impact on our young people, including developing independence, resilience, confidence and social skills.”

What is it?

The AAWH programme is designed to break down barriers to outdoor education by covering the full cost of activities, accommodation, and meals. These experiences will allow participants to develop confidence, connection, and resilience through time spent in nature.

“We’re deeply grateful for this support and excited to open the outdoors to children who might not otherwise have the chance to experience it. This funding represents so much more than a trip away – it’s an opportunity for young people to experience freedom, friendship, and personal growth in a way many have never had before.” said CEO Phillipa Spicer.

What happens next?

We are now working with schools, youth groups, and community organisations who expressed interest and supported our Adventures away from home application process to help identify eligible young people who could benefit from this transformative experience.
