Expression of Interest: Adventures Away from home for underrepresented Young People
We are pleased to share that we have an opportunity to apply for Adventures Away from Home (AAWH) funding, on your behalf. This funding, if awarded, would allow us to offer fully funded outdoor learning experiences – including one-day visits and residential stays – to young people who would not normally have access to these opportunities.
Who can take part?
Young people must be aged 11–18 and meet one or more of the following criteria:
- Minoritised ethnic backgrounds
- Living in the secure estate
- Low academic attainment
- English as an additional language
- Experiencing financial hardship (e.g. free school meals)
- Physical disabilities
- Experience of care
- Caring responsibilities (young carers)
- LGBTQI+
- SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities)
- Refugee or asylum seeker
- Living in poverty
- In need of additional support to participate
We aim to reach those who have never or rarely had the chance to take part in outdoor education – for example, a group who has attended a one-day visit before but has never had a residential experience.
What could be covered?
We can apply to cover the following:
- 1-day experience (4+ hours of activities + a meal)
- 1-night residential (8+ hours of activities, 4 meals, full board accommodation)
- 2-night residential (12+ hours of activities, 6 meals, full board accommodation)
More Information
- Each child may only attend once using this funding.
- Transport costs are not included – groups are expected to arrange and fund this themselves.
- Participants will also be asked to complete short surveys before, after, and 6 months following the experience.
- This funding may only cover children in these groups, and not make up part of a wider group.
- The trip will be between October and March.

What we need from you
To submit a strong application, we need to identify how many young people might be eligible and what kind of experiences would benefit them most from the 3 trips listed.
If you work with or support any of the following, we’d love to hear from you:
- Young carers
- Pupils with SEND
- Refugees or EAL learners
- Children in specialist schools
- Those receiving free school meals
We don’t need full details yet – just an indication of numbers and eligibility so we can build a compelling case for funding.
Interested?
Please fill out this form with your expression of interest by Tuesday 23rd September. We understand that this is a tight turnaround, but in order to be awarded this funding, we must meet the deadline provided to us. At this stage, we would need to know the following:
- The number of young people
- The eligibility criteria they meet
- What type of experience would suit them (day or residential)
- Why you think you should qualify for the funding, including what it would mean to the young people. (100 words max)
Please note: This is not guaranteed funding.
We are currently preparing an application and are looking to identify potential participants to include in our proposal. Your interest will help us demonstrate need, but does not confirm a place or funding at this stage.
If you have any questions about the funding, the opportunity, or whether you would be eligible, please email [email protected].
