As another academic year comes to a close, YMCA Fairthorne Group has a remarkable achievement to celebrate. This September, 213 children from across our nurseries will take one of the biggest steps of their young lives as they begin primary school.
For many families, it’s an emotional milestone. For our Early Years teams, it’s the culmination of months, and often years, of care, encouragement and dedication that have helped each child grow into a confident, curious and capable young learner.
Behind every graduation photograph is a story that rarely makes it into the frame.
It’s the practitioner who patiently encouraged a child to take their first independent steps into the classroom. The colleague who celebrated every milestone, no matter how small. The reassuring conversation with a parent at the end of a difficult day. The carefully planned activities that sparked curiosity, built resilience and inspired confidence. The friendships nurtured, the imaginations encouraged and the safe, welcoming environments created where children could truly belong.
At YMCA, we know that school readiness is about far more than recognising letters, counting numbers or writing a name. It’s about helping children develop the confidence to ask questions, the resilience to overcome challenges, the independence to try new things and the social skills to build meaningful relationships. These are the foundations that enable children not only to succeed in school, but to continue learning and thriving throughout their lives.
Through our Little Steps, Giant Leaps approach, every interaction has purpose. Every activity is an opportunity to learn. Every day is another chance to build confidence and nurture a lifelong love of learning.
That level of impact doesn’t happen by chance.
It is made possible by outstanding Early Years professionals whose expertise, passion and commitment shape children’s futures every single day. From practitioners delivering exceptional learning experiences, to apprentices developing their own skills, nursery managers leading high-performing teams, cooks providing nutritious meals, administrators supporting families and every colleague working behind the scenes, each person plays a vital role in giving children the very best start in life.
As our graduates prepare to swap nursery bags for school backpacks this September, we want to pause and recognise the people who made that journey possible.

The children leaving our nurseries this summer take with them far more than happy memories. They leave with confidence, curiosity, friendships, resilience and a love of learning that will support them for years to come.
While they may be moving on to primary school, the impact you’ve had on their lives will remain with them long after they walk through those school gates for the very first time.
