5 Tips to prepare your child for Primary School

Transitioning from nursery to primary school is a big milestone for both children and their families. During their time at YMCA nursery, we nurtured your children’s confidence, independence, and personal growth – all vital traits for school.

Here are some practical things you can do with your child this summer to prepare your child for primary school, and make the move from nursery to primary school as smooth and positive as possible:

1.  Talk about what’s coming

Discuss what primary school will be like. Share stories, look at pictures of the new school, and talk about the fun activities they might do there. This helps build excitement and reduces fear of the unknown.

2. Visit the new school

If possible, attend any open days, welcome events, or transition sessions. Even walking or driving past the school regularly can help your child become familiar with the environment.

3. Practice the routine

Start getting your child used to the school-day schedule. Going through this routine in advance helps reduce stress when school begins.

4. Encourage independence

Children who can manage tasks like dressing themselves, using the toilet, and opening lunchboxes tend to settle into school more easily. Let them practice these skills so they feel confident doing them on their own.

5. Foster a love of learning

Keep reading together, encourage curiosity, and exploring basic maths and literacy recognition in everyday life. Learning should always feel fun, not pressured.

At YMCA, we’re proud to have helped your child build the foundations they need to thrive. With your continued encouragement and preparation, they’ll be ready to take this next step with confidence!
