Volunteers’ Week is coming to an end, and we’re taking a moment to celebrate the incredible people who give their time to support YMCA Fairthorne Group.
We’ve already shared Arthur’s, Sam’s, and Bernard’s Volunteering stories, and we are concluding with Jim – our award-winning volunteer!
Jim began volunteering at Fairthorne Manor as part of the Estates Team. Here, he stumbled across the boat yard. As a lifelong sailor he knows his way round a boat or two and he quickly turned his attention to restoring and maintaining YMCA Fairthorne Group’s extensive boat collection.
One of his biggest projects since he started volunteering at YMCA has been to restore the 25ft Drascombe Gig – a boat to teach sailing, enjoy rowing and motoring down the river Hamble for up to 12 people.
Jim lovingly repaired the hull of the boat, replaced the seats, repaired the base for the motor, fixed the leaking holes and repainted the vessel.
The Drascombe Gig is now back on the water ready for children to enjoy making memories and embarking on adventures.
Award winning volunteering
Last year, Jim won the Outstanding Volunteer Award at our staff Star Awards. Jim’s commitment to the Fairthorne Manor boating programme has been nothing short of inspirational. His quiet dedication and attention to detail reflect the very best of what volunteering can be.
