A newly launched government campaign called “Do Something Big” encourages people to think about starting careers working with young children. The idea is to show the variety of early years careers and how you can progress in your career. Working with young children is not only rewarding but also gives you the chance to make a real difference in their lives.
Research shows that lots of people in the UK are interested in working with young children. Parents recognise how important early years professionals are in helping their children grow and develop. Many parents think these professionals are some of the most important people in their child’s life.
This campaign comes at a time when there’s a need for more childcare workers. More children than ever are getting funding for childcare, and this is expected to increase from April 2024.
So, what does this mean for parents?
Well, there’s good news! More help with childcare costs is on the way. Depending on your situation, you might be able to get more funded childcare hours for your child. This is being introduced gradually over the next few years.
To get this extra help, you usually need to earn between a certain amount of money. But if you don’t work, you might still be eligible for funded childcare if your partner works or you get certain benefits.
Working parents can get:
New!
- 15 hours of funded childcare a week for two-year-olds from April 2024
- 15 hours of funded childcare for nine-month-olds from September 2024
- 30 hours of funded childcare for all under-5s from September 2025
Existing arrangements:
- 30 hours of funded childcare for three and four-year-olds
- To qualify for the new hours, parents must earn more than £8,670 but less than £100,000 per year.
If you don’t work, you might be eligible for 30 hours of funded childcare if your partner works, or you receive certain benefits.
The deadline to apply for funded childcare for two-year-olds is 31st March 2024.
